Asphalt Paving Over Concrete in Atlanta

Whether it is referred to as black top, bitumen or macadam, asphalt pavement covers nearly 95 percent of the paved roads in America. There are also more parking lots paved in asphalt than concrete. In addition, asphalt pavement is widely used for airport runways at major facilities, including O’Hare International, San Francisco International and Newark International, and it is extremely prevalent at countless small airfields. Asphalt has become the paving material of choice for several reasons.

Asphalt Paving Over Concrete In Atlanta- Why It Works Best

Savings can be Significant

From initial installation to repairs, it costs less for asphalt pavement than it does for concrete. On average, it costs between 35 and 45 percent less to construct a new span of asphalt pavement than it does to build the same span with concrete. When repairs are needed on concrete pavement, it can be a costly process to remove and replace the damaged area. Asphalt repairs can often be completed in less than half a day and at substantially less expense.

Initial Installation and Repairs are Faster

Whether it is an airport runway or the parking lot at a shopping mall, the area needs to be built or repaired as quickly as possible. The same is true for highways, city streets and residential driveways. The longer an area is out of service, the more traffic flow is disrupted and the more your employees, customers or guests will be inconvenienced. Concrete pavement can take as long as seven days to dry sufficiently to bear traffic, but asphalt pavement typically needs just one or two days. Most asphalt repairs can be completed in less than a day, but concrete repairs often span multiple days.

Asphalt Pavement Offers a Superior Finish

When only the smoothest surface will do, asphalt pavement is superior to concrete. This is one reason that asphalt runways have become increasingly popular. For interstates and highways, safety is a major concern, and asphalt’s superior traction makes it a winner in that category as well. If only the pavement’s appearance is considered, asphalt comes out ahead again; its glossy black color is simply more interesting than concrete. Should asphalt pavement begin to lose its color, applying fresh sealcoating will renew it.
